Herman Miller Aeron vs Vitra Pacific Chair: Which Should You Buy?

Key difference: The Herman Miller Aeron is a current chair sold in three sizes with a published spec sheet and a US list price from $1,775, while the Vitra Pacific Chair has been discontinued and has no official specifications we could check.

Figures for the Herman Miller Aeron come from Herman Miller's official specs page, product sheet and US store; no figures are given for the Vitra Pacific Chair. Prices are regular US list prices, and Chairpedia has not tested either chair.

Why compare them

Why put the Herman Miller Aeron next to the Vitra Pacific Chair? Both are designer office chairs with a mesh back from established European and American furniture makers. The Pacific Chair was designed for Vitra by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, with height-adjustable arms and a mesh back. The Aeron is Herman Miller's long-running mesh work chair, offered in three sizes with a range of arm, tilt and lumbar options. Anyone weighing the two today is usually choosing between a current chair they can configure new and a discontinued design they would have to find as remaining or second-hand stock.

Specs side by side

Vitra Pacific Chair: This brand does not publish official specifications. The Pacific Chair is discontinued, and its product pages are no longer available on Vitra's site, so we could not check an official specification. The table below shows Herman Miller's official Aeron figures; the Pacific column is left empty.

Strengths and things to know

Herman Miller Aeron

Strengths

• Three sizes — A (Small), B (Medium), C (Large) — so seat size and load rating can be matched to the user.
• Load capacity is stated per size: 300 / 350 / 400 lb (136 / 158.8 / 181.4 kg).
• Warranty: 12-year, 3-shift warranty, with limited exceptions.
• Lumbar options run from no additional support to Adjustable PostureFit SL.
• Currently sold new by Herman Miller, so it can be configured and bought with a current warranty.

Good to know

• US list price runs $1,775–$2840 depending on size and options.
• Seat depth is fixed per size (16 / 17 / 18.5 in), so choosing the right size matters.
• Headrest: None offered by Herman Miller.

Vitra Pacific Chair

Strengths

• Designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby for Vitra, which appeals to buyers furnishing a design-led space.
• Height-adjustable arms and a mesh back, according to the product description.

Good to know

• This brand does not publish official specifications. The chair is discontinued, so seat measurements, load rating and warranty are not stated here.
• No current US list price is on record, so any price you see is a dealer or resale price to verify on its own.
• Buying second-hand usually means no manufacturer warranty; ask the seller about condition, parts and any remaining cover.

How they differ

Availability. The Aeron is in Herman Miller's current range. The Pacific Chair is discontinued, so it is only available while dealer stock or used chairs last.

Sizing. The Aeron comes in three sizes with stated seat height, seat depth and load capacity for each. For the Pacific Chair we could not check official measurements, so this page does not compare sizes between the two.

Warranty. Herman Miller states a 12-year, 3-shift warranty, with limited exceptions, for the Aeron bought new. A discontinued chair bought second-hand usually carries no manufacturer warranty; confirm with the seller.

Price. The Aeron's regular US list price runs $1,775–$2840. We have no sourced price for the Pacific Chair, so we do not state one.

Design. Both chairs pair a mesh back with a work-chair mechanism. The Pacific's appeal is largely its Barber Osgerby design; the Aeron's is a long-documented configuration range.

Fit and buying checks

For the Aeron, use Herman Miller's sizing guidance to pick A, B or C, then compare the seat height for that size with your desk. For a Pacific Chair, ask the seller for the exact model and options, check that the gas cylinder, tilt and arms all work, and measure the seat height and depth yourself before paying, since there is no official specification to compare against.

Who should buy which

• Pick the Aeron over the Pacific if you want to buy new with a stated 12-year, 3-shift warranty.
• Pick the Aeron over the Pacific if you want a size choice and published measurements to check fit.
• Pick the Aeron over the Pacific if you want lumbar options such as Adjustable PostureFit SL.
• Pick the Pacific over the Aeron if you specifically want the Barber Osgerby design for Vitra and are comfortable buying a discontinued chair second-hand.
